ARM chips still have a considerable price disadvantage to 8-bit chips. And they are more complex / time consuming to setup and debug than 8-bit chips too.
In terms of speed, ARM chips aren't that much faster than 8-bit chips, if you control for cpu clock.
What ARM chips do exceptionally well is to lower software development cost and provide upward mobility for the products as well as developers. whatever knowledge you have on an 8-bit chip is going to be less useful 10 years from now. But your ARM knowledge will be more useful 10 years from now.
so learning about 8-bit chips doesn't make as much sense for a new mcu engineer as learning about ARM. |
