let me just add a little bit more.
two things are widely understood and rarely acknowledged in high-end audio:
1) in a sighted test, it is extremely difficult NOT to tell the difference (unless you are well trained and have great control over your mind).
2) in a (double-) blind test, it is extremely difficult to tell the difference (unless you are well trained).
there is a great body of scientific literature called "placebo effect": our minds are so powerful that they make us hear things we cannot hear, see things we cannot see, etc.
give you some examples. the consensus is that well trained humans can hear distortion roughly in the 0.1% - 1% range (-60db to - 40db), in an ideal situation. there are many tests on the next that can confirm that, and most "audiophiles" can hear maybe -30 to - 40db.
modern solid state amps can easily do 10 or 100x better than that, at full power and over the entire audible spectrum. yet you constantly hear people saying that they can tell amplifiers apart.
high quality speakers routinely distortion around 10% at full power. Yet, very few audiophiles will claim to be able to hear speakers apart.
if you can remember anything from this post, remember this: you must be practically deaf if you couldn't tell two devices apart in a sighted test. and you must be extremely talented if you could tell two devices apart in a blind test. |
